Green Steel: What It Means and How It Affects Buyers in India in 2026
Steel is essential to construction, manufacturing, infrastructure, and fabrication. But producing conventional steel also creates significant carbon emissions. That is why green steel is becoming an important part of India's steel industry. For buyers, however, green steel is not simply about choosing a product labelled "eco-friendly." It is about understanding how the steel is produced, how its emissions are measured, and what certification supports the claim.

What Is Green Steel?
Green steel generally refers to steel produced with significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions than conventional steel by using cleaner technologies, renewable energy, greater scrap utilisation, green hydrogen, and other emission-reduction methods.
India now has an official Green Steel Taxonomy, introduced by the Ministry of Steel in December 2024. Under the taxonomy, steel qualifies for a green rating when its emissions are below 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of finished steel.
The system includes three ratings:
- 3-Star: 2.0 to below 2.2 tCO₂e per tonne
- 4-Star: 1.6 to below 2.0 tCO₂e per tonne
- 5-Star: below 1.6 tCO₂e per tonne
Whether the buyer is looking for MS steel product in Vadodara or green steel, this gives them a clearer way to distinguish lower-emission steel from broad or unsupported sustainability claims.
Why Is Green Steel Important in India in 2026?
India's steel industry is moving towards lower-carbon production as part of the country's long-term net-zero goal. The government is supporting measures including energy efficiency, renewable energy, increased scrap use, green hydrogen, and other cleaner technologies. The shift is already moving beyond policy discussions. As of 31 March 2026, 89 steel units had received green steel certification, covering 12.34 million tonnes of production capacity.
For buyers, this means low-emission steel is gradually becoming a real procurement option rather than a distant concept.
How Does Green Steel Affect Steel Buyers?
1. Sustainability May Become Part of Procurement
For companies with ESG targets or sustainability reporting requirements, the carbon footprint of purchased steel may become an increasingly important procurement factor. Instead of asking only, "What grade and price is this steel?", buyers may also need to ask, "What is its verified emission intensity?"
2. Certification Will Matter More
A green claim should be supported by proper documentation. India's framework provides for measurement, reporting, verification, green steel certificates, and star ratings, with NISST serving as the nodal agency for these activities.
3. Price Is Not the Only Factor
Green steel may involve newer production technologies, cleaner energy sources, and additional certification requirements. This can influence its price and availability. However, for businesses with sustainability commitments or customers demanding lower-carbon products, the lowest purchase price may not represent the lowest overall procurement value.
4. Product Quality Still Comes First
Green steel does not mean buyers should compromise on the fundamentals. The steel must still meet the required grade, dimensions, mechanical properties, chemical composition, and applicable standards for the intended application.
